Privacy Policy

Spurr is a running app. A runner sets up a race and shares a link; friends and family use that link to record a short voice message — a “Spurr” — which plays in the runner’s ear at a chosen point during the race. This policy covers both the Spurr iOS app and this website.

• Your voice recording. Recorded in your browser when you press record, and uploaded only when you choose to send it.
• The name you type. Shown to the runner so they know who the Spurr is from. You can put anything you like.
• Your email address, only if you offer it. After you have sent a Spurr, we ask whether you would like to hear when the runner plays it. This is optional — the Spurr is already sent either way. If you leave an address we use it for that one email and nothing else: no newsletter, no marketing, and it is never shown to the runner, sold, or shared. It is sent from an address we do not monitor, and it carries a link that deletes your address in one click.

• How you used the page. We record that a link was opened, and which step you reached — whether recording was blocked by your browser, whether the microphone was allowed, how long your recording was, and whether you sent it. We do this to find out where the page confuses people, so we can fix it.

We do not ask you to create an account, and we never ask for your phone number or location. The only email address we hold is one you have chosen to give us for the notification above. We do not store your IP address for this, and none of it is shared with an advertising network.

When you open a link to record a Spurr, we ask whether we may remember your device. If you say yes, we store a random number in a cookie — no name, no email, nothing that identifies you — so that we can tell whether two recordings came from the same person rather than two different people.

If you say no, no cookie is set and the page works exactly the same. We still count the visit, but we cannot tell you apart from anyone else. You can clear the cookie at any time in your browser settings, and we will ask again next time.

Whatever you choose, your browser keeps two things for the page to work safely: how many spurrs you have sent to a link recently (so we can slow down a burst of sends), and a random number attached to each spurr you send. That number identifies nothing about you. It exists so a runner who receives something abusive can block whoever sent it from sending to their race again. It stays in our own database and is never used for analytics.

We do not use cookies for advertising, and we do not track you across other websites.

• Race details you enter — the name you give the run, its date and distance, and the milestones you set.
• Location, during a race only. While a race is running, the app uses your device’s location to measure how far you have gone, so each Spurr plays at the right milestone. It also records the shape of your route so you can see it afterwards. Location is not collected when a race is not in progress.
• Sign in with Apple. Signing in is required to set up a race. We receive an identifier from Apple and your name, which Apple shares with us only the first time you sign in. We do not request or receive your email address. Signing in lets your races follow you to a new device.
• A push notification token, if you allow notifications. This lets your phone show a notification when a Spurr arrives — it identifies your device to Apple's notification service, not you personally.

Your profile name is held only on your own device and is never uploaded.

Recordings are stored so the runner can play them during and after their race. They are held at long, randomly generated web addresses that are not listed or searchable.

Anyone who has one of those addresses can play the recording without signing in. The address is hard to guess, but it is not protected by a password. Please treat a Spurr as something you are comfortable being heard by the runner and anyone they choose to share it with.

On our main website pages — the home page, the pages for runners and senders, and our privacy and terms pages — we use PostHog to understand how people find and use the site: which pages are visited, for how long, and what is clicked.

It only starts if you choose Accept on the cookie banner. If you decline, it is never loaded. When it runs, PostHog sets a cookie to recognise a returning browser, and the data is held in the EU. We don’t record your screen.

PostHog is never loaded on a page for recording a Spurr or on the contact form, so it never sees a share link or anything you record or send. You can change your mind at any time by clearing cookies for spurr-app.com; we will ask again on your next visit.

The Spurr app sends anonymous usage statistics to PostHog, so we can see where people get stuck and fix it: which screens are opened, which steps of setting up a race are completed, whether a link was shared, whether a purchase went through, how long GPS took to find you, how a race ended, and which error messages appeared.

These statistics are tied to a random ID created on your device, not to your account, your Apple ID or your name. They never include your name, your race name, recordings, the names of the people who sent them, your share link, or your location. The data is held in the EU and is not used for advertising or shared with anyone else.

It is on by default. You can turn it off at any time in the app, under Account > Account & privacy > Share anonymous usage stats; nothing more is sent after that.

Recordings and race data are stored with Supabase, on Amazon Web Services infrastructure in London (eu-west-2). Some data may be processed outside the UK by these providers in the course of running the service.

Recordings and race data are kept so a runner can listen back after the race. A runner can delete individual Spurrs from within the app at any time, which removes them from our systems.

If you recorded a Spurr and want it removed, contact us with rough details — the runner’s name and roughly when you sent it — and we will delete it.

An email address you left to hear when your Spurr played is stored against that Spurr and nothing else. Use the removal link to delete it, or wait: when the Spurr is deleted — by the runner, by us on request, or when the runner deletes their account — the address goes with it.

When you use our contact form we collect what you type into it — what it is about, your name if you give it, your email address and your message — plus the type of browser or device you sent it from. If you are reporting a spurr, we also record which spurr, so we can find and review it.

We use this only to reply to you and to deal with what you have asked or reported. It is not shared, and it is not used for marketing. We keep it until your request is resolved, and for no more than 12 months.

You can delete your account from within the app. That removes your races, the route shapes we hold for them, and the Spurrs people recorded for you.

Every race is free. You can upgrade a race through Apple, one race at a time. Apple takes the payment and we never see your card details — we only record against your account that a race was upgraded, so it is still there if you sign in on another device.

• We don’t sell your data.
• We don’t use it for advertising or profiling.
• We don’t use advertising trackers, and we don’t share data with advertisers.
• We don’t listen to recordings except where needed to fix a fault you have reported, or to review a spurr reported to us.

Spurr is not aimed at children under 13. A child may well appear in a recording made by a parent — that is fine and expected — but we do not knowingly collect data directly from children.

If you are in the UK or EU you can ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Use our contact form and we will respond within one month.
